Folk and Fun Weekends

Held twice a year around Northumberland, October and March

These weekends start around 7.30pm with an organised singaround with the evening's host selecting the next one on until just after 12 when the system changes too, after your turn select someone else, again there is no pressure to sing, several just come to listen or join in the chorus.

Three more singarounds were organised for Saturday afternoon, Saturday Evening and Sunday Afternoon, the rest of the time was filled with walking, eating and sleeping.

My Comments

These weekends have been organised for over 21 years by Dave Minikin from an idea he had at the Black Bull Folk club, Blaydon, effectively they are extended singers nights where you can drink without having to drive home, entertain and be entertained. I attended in October 2002, the weekend held at Hadrian's Lodge at Haydon Bridge, I had travelled 150 miles but most were relatively local about 30 miles away, the group were very friendly and accommodating and welcomed newcomers, the age range from 30 upwards. There was about 60-40 unaccompanied and accompanied singing, some very experienced and some novices, but that didn't matter as everyone was given the same ovation, an excellent weekend, I have attended the last few and hope to make the next. Food and accommodation was good and there was a bar.

Average Attendance 40+

Price of the Weekends The sessions are free, B&B prices. (about £35 per night)

Next Weekend 7th, 8th and 9th March 2008 at The Hope and Anchor, Alnmouth, Northumberland

and 17th, 18th, 19th October 2008 Venue to be confirmed
